Constructing a good sentence

HOW TO CONSTRUCT A GOOD SENTENCE To understand sentences, you must first understand clauses, which make up sentences. A clause is defined as a group of words containing both a subject and a verb. Clauses can be independent or dependent. An independent clause contains both a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a sentence. A dependent clause contains both a subject and a verb, but cannot stand alone as a sentence. Dependent clauses are introduced by subordinating conjunctions such as because, that, what, while, who, which, although, if, etc. Kinds of Sentences There are three kinds of sentences: SIMPLE: - A simple sentence consists of one main (or independent) clause. To be complete, a simple sentence must have at least one SUBJECT and one 'verb'. - A simple sentence may also have a compound subject and/or a compound verb. COMPOUND:   - A compound sentence has at least two main (or independent) clauses, connected by coordinating conjunctions (...

What is Sonnet? - a very structured type of poetry in which the author attempts to show two related but differing thinhs to the reader in order to communicate something about them. - this was first developed in Italy, porbably in the 13th century. -  a sonnet consists of 14 lines - there are 3 types of sonnet. There are the following:       ● SHAKESPEAREAN SONNET (English)       ● PETRARCHAN SONNET (Italian)       ● SPENSERIAN SONNET SONNET VOCABULARY Quatrain - a stanza of 4 lines Octave - an 8 line stanza. Used primarily to denote the first eight-line division of the Italian Sonnet as separate from the six-line division, the sestet. Sestet - the second six-line division of an Italian Sonnet. Following the eight-line division (octave), the sestet usually makes specific a general statement that has been presented in the octave or indicates the personal emotion of the author in a situation that the octave has ...

SENSORY IMAGES           -  Sensory Images   include sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. Sensory images are images created in your head from a very detailed description of something, often using one of the five senses.           - Also it can be what you imagine in your head as you read the story.            - Good narratives make use of image and sound-evoking words to transport a reader into the world of the story. Beowulf's story uses descriptive language to appeal to the readers' senses.                                            OLD ENGLISH LITERATURE Old English Literature or Anglo-Saxon literature, encomposses literature written in Old English, in Anglo-Saxon England from the 7th century to the decades after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Angles, Jutes and Saxons were initially different tribes from continental Europe. The Angles came from an area in modern-day Germany called Angeln on the Jutland Peninsula. The Jutes, on the other hand, came from the northern part of the Jutland Peninsula and mainly settled in Kent. Finally the Saxons appear to have come from Holstein, just south of the Jutland Peninsula. They settled in the south of England, creating the kingdoms Wessex, Sussex, Essex and Middlesex. LITERATURE is a written works such as poems, novels etc. That has a lasting importance in our world. It has an intelectual value and its also a work-of-art. Its a universal interest and it is also a written account.  Literature has three (3) parts. The first one is the POETRY, second is the PROSE and of course the third one is the DRAMA. Let us first begin in the POETRY. POETRY has also three (3) parts. The LYRIC, NARRATIVE and the DRAMATIC. The types of LYRIC are the following: BALLAD - a kind of poem or song that tells a story. The example of this is "Lord Randal My Son". SONG - a short piece of music with words that is sung. SONNET - a poem that made up of 14 lines that rhyme in a fixed pattern. The two (2) types of SONNET are THE SHAKESPEAREAN and the PETRARCHAN SONNET. Next is the PASTORAL. ODE - a poem which is a person expresses a strong feeling of love or respect to someone or something. And the last one is ELEGY - a song or a poem that expresses a...
